FOOD PROCESSING

We make our own tortillas (starting with ears of field corn and lime), tofu (with beans from the field), sauerkraut, etc. I enjoy translations on food chemistry.

HOUSEBUILDING AND CONSERVATION

My partner Jim Deigert (technical editor, computer maintenance) and I are building a house with some passive solar heat (two sun porches), 9" wall insulation, soundproofing, low maintenance stucco, stainless steel roof. Should be heatable electrically for $100/year, in Michigan. We have experience in foundation work, framing, stuccoing, roofing, rough electrical and plumbing, glazing and installing windows, and vapor barriers. There is no answering machine at this number, let it ring in case we are up on a ladder or under a floor. We are currently redrawing the plans with a computer, since there is little of the original paper left to erase.

ELECTRONICS

We were volunteering for two years at the local Kiwanis rummage sale evaluating, repairing, setting up and sometimes even selling stereo equipment, computers, and miscellany. We quit in mid June 2000 because there was no sign that the insulation promised us for over a year (over the block wall and metal roof/ceiling, R-1) would ever materialize. We were given permission to purchase and install our own window. Photos of the installation process can be seen at John Kilar's website : jpegs kiwanwind1-5 (deconstruction of the block wall) and kiwind61600-7 (the window going in, June 16 2000).
